One Housing Reveals Reablement Success at National Housing Conference

Housing LIN Extra Care Conference showcased benefits of integrated approach

Posted: 3/14/2016 12:58:21 PM

One Housing revealed some of the secrets behind the success of its Roseberry Mansions Reablement Service at a packed workshop during the fifth annual Housing LIN Extra Care Conference on 11 March.

Roseberry Mansions, based at Kings Cross, provides intensive short term support and therapies that enable hospitalised people to return home or to other appropriate long term accommodation. The service is regularly held up as an example of best practice in partnership working and was featured in the recently published Crisp Report into mental health care.

Assistant Director of Health and Housing Partnerships at One Housing, Neil Tryner said:
“We’re proud that Roseberry Mansions helps people live better by ensuring they can live in an appropriate environment outside a hospital setting. Good telecare plays a significant role in helping us get people back to the right home environment for them.”
Data from the first ten months of the service provision showed that 72% of people returned home, or to other appropriate accommodation, and 28% of those who returned home did so with a reduced care package. This resulted in savings to the NHS of £288,695 alone, which extrapolates to a forecast saving of £1.7 million over five years. The cost benefits to adult social care of customers returning to their homes in a sustainable manner instead of a move to long term nursing care equates to £214,500 per person over five years.

As the health economy continues to be strained by rising levels of A&E presentations, delayed discharge from hospitals and budgetary restraints, utilising reablement services underpinned by technology represents a real opportunity to reduce ongoing care needs and deliver clinically safe services at a reduced cost.
